I will be travelling to Athens in July with my 18yr old daughter. We will be staying for 3 nights after 4 nights in Naxos and looking for hotel area recommendations. Looking at the hotel Philippos near the Acropolis museum or the Attalos Hotel near the Monastiraki Metro.. Any thoughts on which area and /or the specific hotels? Thanks
Last year we stayed at the Herodion, a sister property a couple of blocks from the Philippos. We were entirely happy with it. The location was unbeatable, rooftop restaurant had views of the Parthenon in one direction and its sculptures on the top floor of the museum in the other. Nice rooms (we stayed two separate times), fine breakfast, comfortable friendly bar off the lobby. Based on our experience at the Herodion I'd expect the Philippos to be fine also.
Others on this board have recommended the Attalos. The Monastiraki area is convenient to the sights and, perhaps, livelier than the area just south of the Acropolis where the Philippos and Herodion are. Might be better for nightlife if that's on your agenda.
Wife and I stayed at the Attalos years ago and liked it; more recently this has been our standard: http://www.arethusahotel.gr
Have a great trip-
We must have stayed in the Attalos dozens of times in the last few years and always liked it. Other places we've stayed are the Phaedra
and the Tempi
Both are smaller and family run and we like them both but we always end up back at the Attalos when it's free. For us it's the right balance of comfort, convenience and price.

A few years ago we stayed at the Philippos, noted above, and were quite pleased. Reasonably priced, comfortable room with a large balcony that was very nice. On a quiet residential street, 10 min walk from Acropolis metro and restuarants, ATMs, etc. The staff were great. They were helpful and accomodating, held our luggage a few nights while we ducked out to Nafplio. Breakfast was very good, in a pleasant room. First morning down, I asked for a pot of coffee and cups to return to the room. Every morning for days thereafter she met me with a huge smile and coffee and cups ready to go. Location, service, friendliness and price...a winner all the way around. The Herodion looked a little more upscale, if only guessing from the lobby and restaurant areas we saw. We had dinner one night at the Herodion...nice enough, nothing memorable for me, but no complaints. Safe travels.
We always stay at the Attalos Hotel on Athinas St. Clean, safe and centrally located to everything one goes to Athens for including the Central Markets which is a must even if you don't buy anything.
24/7 reception desk, computers/printers free of charge, free Raki at the reception desk, and one of the best rooftop bars/gardens in Athens with outstanding views of the Acropolis and all of Athens.

Herodion and Phillipos are a bit upmarket in price from the budget hotels recommended. A lot depends on where you want to stay ... in recent years I've favored their location, which is South of the acropolis, just off the pedestrianized promenade ... scenic and quieter, yet just steps from sightseeing. The bargain hotel in that area is Phaedra, small & family-run, which also has free computers, 24/7 reception ... rooms are plain but very clean, balconies either have view of Acropolis, or of St. Catherines church -- and it has a roof terrace with lovely views, no bar, you BYO for nice breakfasts or sundown beverages. Attalos is a larger hotel -- I must admit that I'm not as fond of its Monastiraki square location because of huge street crowds, motorcycles etc, especially on weekend nights, area is a big grungier, but that's just me. If I weren't on budget I'd go for hi floor on Herodion or Phillipos.
Janet,Tommy,Denny,Alan Joel and Dick... thanks for your advice and recommendations
The area between Syntagma - Monastiraki - and Acropolis is called the golden triangle. More highly prices but most of the attractions are in reach within minutes. The outer you get the cheaper it becomes.I would avoid though Omonoia. if you are goint for on the edge of the historical centre check metro connections towards by to the Syntagma - Monastiraki - and Acropolis/
I stayed at the Evripides Hotel last summer. It's just around the corner from several of the other ones suggest above. Perfectly good with a great rooftop patio and breakfast room. Very close to Monastiraki Square and a really active night scene that appeared to be free of tourists but with some funky bars and restaurants. They even parked my car for me.
We have stayed several times at the Acropolis View, near the pedestrian walkway that winds around the Acropolis. Basic budget hotel, but clean and can't beat the location. Easy walk to Acropolis, Theater of Dionysius, and Plaka. About a 10 minute walk from the Akopoli metro stop
We stayed at the Attalos last April and enjoyed it - close to the sites with great view from the rooftop terrace.
If you are still looking for a place in Athens, check out Acropolis Select Hotel.
Stayed there as part of the RS tour. Easy access to Acropolis, museums and restaurants.
They will even give you a bucket of ice!
