Would like suggestions for hotel that you have used and can recommend for overnight prior to boarding cruise. I believe the cruise port is outside of city. We depart in mid May.
My Athens visits have mainly been in late May, early June, and at that time I like staying just South of the Acropolis grounds -- it's away from the heavy traffic around Syntagma Square, it's green & tree-lined, open to the sky, more serene, yet steps to everything. All along the S. Side of the Acropolis "park" is a lovely wide no-cars promenade ... and in early evening before dinner, in mild weather many Athenians take a stroll -- parents with baby carriage. kids on trikes, a balloon man, an ice-cream cart... looks like a postcard.
I'm a dedicated budgeteer so won't offer my hotel -- but If I wanted something special for just 1 night, I'd check that area for hotel room with an Acropolis view balcony ... and ideally a rooftop terrace with ditto view, for dinner, or at least for cocktails. There are several hotels like this i've recommended many times, with v. good feedback -- Hotel Herodion, Divani Palace -- both have rooftop restaurants & bars and I believe they're open in May.
BTW, a taxi from Airport to anywhere in Central Athens is a flat-fee, €39 or €40 now I believe, covering everything; bags, tolls etc. There are also several car services -- Welcome Pick-Ups and City Cab are 2 I know -- that charge same exact rate, drivers all are fluent in English, and meet you outside of baggage claim so you needn't even find the taxi line. The morning or afternoon after your hotel stay, a taxi to Pireaus seaport cruise line piers can be from €20- €35, depending on whether it's rush-hour traffic. It's good to have your hotel get the taxi; doorman can then tell you the estimated fare.... never hurts to be informed. Have a lovely overnight in Athens -- and I hope y ou'll have a bit of time there after your cruise.
Janet and I are budget travellers. So in that category look at hotel Attalos. It is a few blocks away from the Acropolis, it is a budget hotel but many rooms have Acropolis views and it has a rooftop bar with amazing Acropolis views.
It is no more than a 10 minute walk to all the sites and do consider a walk around in the central market just 5 minutes away. Its a whole city block where you can purchase any food items you want.
For my last visit to Athens I stayed in the Omiros Hotel on the edge of the Plaka and just a short walk to Syntagma Square. The breakfast was bountiful, the rooms clean, and there is a rooftop area where you can sit and enjoy the Acropolis slowly light up at dusk.
I'm a budget travel and always stay at the Attalos Hotel on Athinas St. It's clean, safe and centrally located right next to the Central Markets and a short walk to Monistiraki Square and the start of the tourist zone.
There are numerous accommodations so there's something for everyone and in a budget for everyone.
We also stayed at the Attalos (back in Spring 2016) and would recommend. Unless you have an early cruise departure it's easy to catch the train from central Athens to the port. If you have an early departure the Piraeus Port Hotel is a good alternative.
