Athens Greece - Hired tour guides or self guide

Going to Athens in the latter part of March for my sons spring break. Are we good with doing our own walking tour and using buses or should we get a tour guide? He wants to do the major sites and were only staying in Athens for 2 nights and then off to Budapest and Vienna. I have the RS Athens pocket book and have downloaded the tours on my phone, has anyone hired a tour guide, if so, in your opinion was it worth it or could you have just done yourself? I know personal preference, but would love to hear your point of view. Thank you!

Do not use "Hop-on Hop-off" tourists buses to visit major sites.

In Athens this kind of bus makes no sense. Most of the major sites are grouped in the same area and accessible on foot via small streets where these buses do not go.

In the buses you will stay on the main avenues, in traffic jams, inhaling gas exhaust

If you want to use the services and knowledge of a guide, be aware that only official guides with a license can accompany you to the sites.

You can find visits with official guides for example here:
