Athens DIY tour or formal tour

We are a family of 4. I just booked a 3.5 hour walking tour of the city including Acropolis which includes entry. Would anyone recommend our doing it ourselves?i

In Athens, there are now so many tour offers, which combine (or not) food, walks, sites, museums, etc., that it's impossible to tell you whether the one you booked is worth it or not.

Does your tour include, in addition to the entrance ticket, an officially licensed guide to visit the Acropolis?

Regarding the walking part, I would say that a map and a pair of shoes are sufficient if you know what you want to see.
With a group walking tour, you'll have no choice but to follow the guide. He/She decide where you go, what you see, and what's supposed to interest you. It's impossible to stop for 30 seconds somewhere along the way if it's not what the guide has planned.

Wherever we go, we never book any tours, especially not walking tours. I roughly plan our own walking tour with what we want to see, and sometimes we deliberately deviate from my so well-prepared itinerary, which is much more fun.

hey hey AvaS
i agree with JoLui with so many tours available but your decision which one is worth it. how much is ticket if entrance cost not included. they have their own plans that may not be deviated. did one in tuscany and we wanted something different added. he said no, mostly because of getting kickbacks from other vendors, we were not happy.
like JoLui says, wear comfy shoes and have a good map. do an early morning tour if you are there this summer with it being HOT HOT HOT and high season with lots of tourists. dress comfy too for the weather

If you want context for your acropolis visit, visit the Acropolis museum first. Unless your Walking tour is scheduled to be at the Acropolis when it first opens, I would ditch the tour. As the day goes on it gets just too crowded.

I followed your link and saw this tour starts at 9:30. That would be getting right into the thick of the crowds.

Since your tour starts with the walking section at 9:30 am from Syntagma Metro Station and ends at the Acropolis, this means you'll be at the Acropolis between approximately 11 am and 1 pm, which is a very crowded time, and also very hot in summer, even in June, to the point where the Acropolis entrance may sometimes be closed for safety reasons in case of heatwaves.
See below:

For comparison, a licensed private guide for the Acropolis charges around €60 for approximately 2 hours (plus tip), and the Acropolis entrance costs €30 at full price. (Entrance is free for the guide).

The official website to book your tickets:

You must select a date and time slot to visit the Acropolis.

It's quite easy to walk around central Athens and see the main attractions, which are located in a fairly limited and largely pedestrianized area.

I created this map to help you decide how to visit the city:

We plan to just use Rick Steve's walking tour from his app.

We are not tour people, but have done a few from this app in other European countries and enjoyed them all so we will do it again.

That way we get some information but can go at our own pace, and at our own time too, plus save money.

Thanks all, these are such helpful suggestions! I am still able to cancel my tour and will do that, as it sounds like the current plan does not make sense.

I have admit I really hate taking tours. I am that guy who wanders off to take photos and the guide has to round up to rejoin the tour. On one of our visits to the acropolis we arrived before opening and there was a tour group there with the guide, doing her presentation. They opened the gates and we entered the site. We were there for just under an hour until the crowds started to get in the way. We exited and found that that same tour was just inside the gate with the guide still talking.

Do it yourselves. Read up on what is there and prioritize the most important sites that are must see.
