Hi!
I’m heading to Greece soon and have a few days in Athens already planned. I’m still deciding which islands to visit and also considering adding a stop somewhere en route to Athens—maybe Budapest, since I missed it on a previous trip and love exploring cities.
I’ll have about two weeks total, and I’m torn between splitting time between a city like Budapest and the Greek islands, or just focusing entirely on Greece. I’ve seen really mixed reviews about the islands, so I’d love some advice. I’m drawn to the lively, younger vibe of places like Mykonos or Ios, but beyond that, I’m not sure where else to go.
I definitely enjoy beaches and being on the water, but I’m more of a city-and-sights traveler than someone who wants to spend the whole time relaxing. Ideally, I’d like a balance—a bit of downtime, but still plenty to explore. Would love any thoughts or suggestions!
Let me know if you’d like to tailor it for a particular audience (like a travel forum or a friend).
Since it sounds like your flight isn't booked yet, have you checked Turkish Airlines? They often have a great fares for someone willing to do a stopover in Istanbul. It could make a good pairing with Athens since it is big cities you are after.
Another idea would be to head to Thessaloniki, obviously a much smaller city, but one I find compelled to visit next time I get to Greece. You could then explore some coastal areas in the north, or stop en route to Athens, or fly to an island. (I lean toward one-country trips, but I don't think you should force it if you are not feeling the pull of nature.)
Budapest is a cool city though, if you are still feeling the pull and the flights work well. But do note that traveling among the islands and all that back and forth is sometimes very time consuming. The simplest course is usually best.
rereed18, decisions are always tough. Tell us some dates and I can look and see what is going on in and around Budapest. That might help you decide.
I'm not big on places like Mykonos , but if you like that kind of vibe, there are direct flights from Budapest to Mykonos (with Ryanair). From Mykonos, you can also easily take the ferry to less hectic and expensive (but still lively) islands like Paros or Naxos. Or you can also go to Tinos.
The village of Naoussa on Paros has a theme park atmosphere, almost similar to that of Mykonos (without the cruise ship crowds and the beach drinking parties with foam machines).
From Budapest Ryan also flies to:
Athens, Chania, Corfu, Mykonos, Preveza - Aktion, Rhodes, Skiathos, Thessaloniki, Zakynthos
Wizz flies to:
Athens, Corfu, Heraklion (Crete), Rhodes, Santorini, Thessaloniki, Zakynthos
