We are leaving from the Athens airport for home in October and want to stay nearby the night before. Any suggestions on an inexpensive place to stay for the one night?
It may not tick the “inexpensive” box, but you can’t get more convenient than the Athens Airport Sofitel.. You literally cross the street and take an escalator up to arrivals.
an inexpensive place to stay for the one night?
The room rate for a night at the Sofitel at the Airport starts at €433 as of mid-October.
Extend your stay in Athens with an extra night in the city. What's the benefit of staying closer to the airport? the Airport is only a 40-minute taxi ride from central Athens.
We just got back from Greece 2 weeks ago. We stayed at the Holiday Inn at the Athens airport which was the nicest Holiday Inn we ever stayed in. They have a free shuttle that leaves for the airport once an hour. They also offer a really nice breakfast. The room cost us a total of 216 euros .
Have seen many positive comments on this forum about this hotel ---
Rooms start at under $200 in Oct.
If we’re ending our trip with some time in Athens, we’ll spend the last night at our Athens hotel and take a taxi to the airport in the morning.
When flying in from an island, we spent our final night at the Sofitel once but have stayed at the Avra Hotel in Rafina several times. We much prefer the Avra.
Avra has a free shuttle from and back to the Athens airport — be sure to sign up for the shuttle when making your reservation. It’s a modern hotel just a short scenic walk from the port, where you can enjoy your final Greek dinner at one of the many tavernas.
Their breakfast buffet opens very early (6 am I believe) and for departures prior to that, they will provide a bag with fruit & breakfast items to bring on the shuttle.
We stayed at the Hotel Avra in Rafina. They have a free shuttle but we had a rental car so just drove in the morning and returned our car before our flight. It is about 20 minutes so not as convenient as being at the airport.
We stayed once (in Vienna) at the airport and I disliked spending my last night in Europe that way. Instead, we walked down to the water and had dinner before repacking for our journey home.
Staying at the Avra Hotel in Rafina is an option, but be aware that it will only save you 20 minutes of travel time compared to Athens. We had the opportunity to stay at the Avra Hotel, not to get closer to the airport, but only to take a ferry from Rafina.
We are in Athens regularly, and even if we have a flight, even very early in the morning, to return home, we stay in Athens for the last night.
Just last week, we were there and spent our last afternoon in town, evening at a restaurant, then at a jazz concert, and then having a few drinks in a bar.
The next morning, a pre-booked taxi was waiting for us in front of our apartment and took us to the airport.
I don't see the point in wasting our time spending an evening and a night close to the airport just to save a few minutes of travel time.
@JoLui, I think it may depend on when the flight is departing whether people feel more comfortable being out by the airport or not. My flight left at 5:30 am. I decided that I wanted to sleep as long as possible........
Carol now,
I understand that 5:30 a.m. may seem early, it means being at the airport around 3:30 a.m.
If that happened to me I would still stay in town, even if it meant extending my stay in a bar until it's time to leave. I never let myself be fooled by this irrational feeling of feeling better (or safer?) for a few minutes of difference.
My grandfather used to tell me: you will rest when you'll be dead, and since he was a sailor, he said:
"The safest place for a boat is the harbor. But the boat wasn't created to stay in the harbor.."
