Arriving Larissa Station midnight or so - safety and taxis??

My first trip to Athens in a couple months! Solo, well-traveled female with city smarts, but I prefer to be prudent. I am considering a one day tour which will return me to Larissa Station between 11:30 PM and midnight. My hotel is near Syntagma Square.

I hope the experienced Athens travelers can help out with the following:

1) Are there taxis waiting outside Larissa Station at that hour? Is Uber a realistic alternative if there are no taxis?

2) What is the general safety of moving through the station and/or standing around waiting for transport at that hour?

Thank you!

There are taxis all over Athens day and night, and a taxi rank is located in front of the metro station. But why not keep it simple and take the metro, since Larissa is a metro station

It's €1.20, and you can reach Syntagma Square in 8 minutes by metro.
There's a metro train about every 12 minutes until 12:20 a.m. on weekdays and 2:00 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Take the train toward Elleniko.

No need to call Uber in Greece, since even Uber taxis are official taxis anyway. I am often in Athens, even very late at night. There is no safety problem in Athens at night unless you feel like wandering around some small streets towards Omonia Square.

Thanks so much for the reply!

If I may, an additional question re the Metro in Athens. In general, except when I know a route in London or Paris for example, I avoid late night subways/metros/underground/etc when traveling by myself. Is the Athens system "safe" for a fit senior-age solo female at midnight?

I may be naive or lucky, but I've never had a problem with a taxi driver in my travels. (maybe a couple attempts to over charge....) Maybe I shouldn't be so certain that taxi is preferable to metro in Athens at night?

Thank, JoLui and anyone else who would like to weigh in!

I’d second Jolui’s suggestion to use the metro. Apart from the usual big city danger of pickpockets - especially on the airport line - Athens is generally a very safe city.

I stayed a couple of minutes walk from Larissa Station in April and several times came back on the metro around midnight. I’m in my seventies, although a man, and never had any reason to feel unsafe. Larissa Station itself often had a couple of private security guards wandering about at that time.

There’s certainly no reason not to take a taxi if you are more comfortable with that but the metro really is very easy.

It's true that you see more security guards in metro stations than police officers in the streets of Athens.

But if you feel more comfortable taking a taxi, do it. Especially if there are taxis waiting in front of Larissa station.

A taxi ride should cost barely €10 with an honest driver who turns on the meter (a little more if it's after midnight - night rate), and will drop you off right where you want to go.

By the way, I don't think you can compare Athens with Paris or London. 11:30 PM / midnight is not a late hour in Athens. You'll see the crowds in the streets, even at midnight.

Thanks for the further info and advice, JoLui.

I suspect what you suggest is correct - that I will get a feel for Athens and the night activity and sense of what I am comfortable with once on the ground. It is very reassuring to hear that Athens is more active in late evening (or what I consider late evening) and populated than I am used to. I appreciate the taxi cost estimate also!

I use Uber a lot when I am in Athens. It's a super easy way to summon a taxi, and you don't have to worry about the "turning on the meter" thing because everything is done through the app.

There should be many taxis available that time of night!

Thanks for the additional info. I've been working with Athens maps today to better understand proximities - getting quite eager for a new destination!!
