Are there guides available at acropolis?

Our group may or may not visit the acropolis on our upcoming trip. We have all been before, many years ago.
We may decide to go on the last morning of our visit. Are there guides at the acropolis to hire independently?
And if so what does this cost? We are a group of 3.
Thanks in advance

I don't remember if there are guides at the Acropolis. We booked a guided walking tour of the Acropolis from Athens Walks, which we enjoyed very much. Not sure if you would be interested in doing this but thought I would let you know.

You cannot "decide to go on he last morning" any more.... the Acropolis is in such demand that the govt has limited the number of people who can enter at any one time. from May (maybe earlier) thru October. starting from 9:30 daily there are huge throngs of people huge cruise-ship and package-tour groups, so you will be staqnding in line all the way up and down.
YOu will not be admitted if you come on the day without a ticket that states your allowed entry time (you do not hve to exit at any certain time). During all those months you will need to plan ahead and order tickets online! And it is not inexpensive anymore. Greece finally realized their entry prices were far below other European countries, and have increased them. The Acropolis itself is now €30, tho the smaller ancient sites in Athens are much less.

And no, there are not guides available at the door, tho this does happen at major sites on a few islands. If you want to be part of a group tour. One of the best-regarded is Athens-Walks (do not confuse it with other groups with Walk i the title). IF you sign up for them, it can be on the basis of THEM getting you the entry ticket ... on the website you can specifiy this, and if there are no tickets left for that day, they will refund your fee. We are all unpaid vollunteers on this forum so we do not have time to give you all the information, such as various prices -- that's part of your pre-trip homework. I hope you have a bit of time before you go, to line things up ... and we hope you have a wonderful time. Athens has changed, of course, and all of Greece, but it remains a glorious adventure.

Thank you both for the comments. I had thought I could have a more flexible approach to an acropolis visit but I see that won’t work here. So we’ll need to decide in advance if we want to go back to the Acropolis and book a tour guide accordingly. Thank you for the recommendations. I have been looking into different tour companies, and was aware of the increase in price of admission. I did have Athens-walks bookmarked in my files so will certainly take another look. I don’t like to have every day scheduled when I travel, but I do understand that, for the highlights, planning in advance maybe be necessary. thanks again.

GLad to hear you are OK with planning ahead. You do not say WHEN you are going (Tip for future: it is important to give at least rough dates when asking for help -- it gets you much better results; advice can differ drastically depending on whethere its for May or July-August - both in terms of extreme heat and crowds, plus prices!). But if you can't manage to get in at 9 am, Athens-Walks now has another tour at about 4 pm, when there's much less crowding... Especially good in Sept - Oct when you can enjoy the lowering sun turning the ruins to gold.

We will be there in October. Yes, that makes sense to add travel dates. I haven’t been traveling much in the past few years and I am certainly rusty. Thanks again for the guidance.

There is a free app put out by Hellenic Heritage. https://www.hh.gr/en/digital-guide/

The app has audio guides in multiple languages to 40 sites in Greece in many languages. You can download the audioguide before you go to the site. At the sites there are signs with numbers that correspond to the app. One of the 40 sites is the Acropolis. I used the app 2 weeks ago for a visit to Delphi.

Wow! a FREE App? That is SO great -- but why is it not publicized?? Once again the story of Greece --- all too often they offer terrific things, but do a terrible job of marketing! This should be promoted constantly, on their online Magazine This is GREECE, and in all available tourist venues online. (of course, it will not be welcomed by the commercial resources selling audio guides. R Steves' free audios for Acropolis & Nat. Arch Museum are very welcome ... but there are no RS guides for other major Greek sites. We frequent contributors to forums will need to help do the promotion job.

Reflects the disservice of the Greece Dept. of Tourism: offices n many major desitnations in Greece, and major cities/capitals of Europe plus US, Canada ... and almost useless because for so long it's been used as a "patronage dump" dept full of unqualified people with political connections. The offices I was most famliar within the past, NYC and Nafplio, were a disgrace. More recently, a French report on the new Govt tourism info kiosk near the Nafplio waterfront, said it was still disorganized at height of tourist season

I did not see the app advertised entering the Acropolis or many of the other sites, but about 10 days later at Delphi there were signs at the entrance to the archaeological site, but I did not see any signs about the app at the Delphi archaeology museum. I think the app is new. Part of the website has been revamped also in the last 2 or 3 months.

That you can download the audioguide each site is a huge plus and not have to rely on data when off wifi is fantastic. Although I was able to download the app and the Delphi data while my partner walked to the museum and bought the entrance tickets at Delphi.

Almost all the ticket prices for the Hellenic Heritage sites increased a lot this year.

We entered the Acropolis at 8AM, beating all the tours to the top. Coming down a little after 9AM even in mid-March the paths were filled with tour groups blocking the paths. This was on a Monday.
