Another post about earthquake contingency planning

Hello: I'm looking for advice/opinions from experienced Greece travelers. We are novice travelers. This will be our first trip to Greece.
I've read through the prior post (regarding earthquake planning) so please bear with me.

For background:
We are first time travelers to Greece. Will be taking the Rick Steve tour 5/24-6/6.
Our trip has three parts: Islands; Meteora and RS tour.
We are arriving in Athens 5/13. Currently booked plans are: fly to Santorini 5/13 for 4 nights, ferry to Folegandros for 3 nights, then ferry back to Athens for a 3 day tour to Meteora prior to starting the RS tour. All these plans include lodging and can be cancelled without fee until April (except the flight to Santorini, which will incur a fee). Meteora and Rick Steves tours will remain intact, questions are about the Santorini-Folegandros part of the trip.

I'm thinking about creating a Plan B for if we have to cancel Santorini/Folegandros due to earthquakes. Would you experienced travelers do this? If so, what might your plan be? I'm thinking Athens - Naxos - Paros? I'd really like to see the Islands....

Obviously, opinions will vary and I'd love to hear what you experienced Greece travelers will offer. Thank you

I can't imagine spending 4 nights on Santorini earthquakes or no. It is crowded and full of tourists who view it as a photo background. Maybe part of your mitigation plans could include less time there and more on another island or the mainland.

Santorini looks like a fine destination. I t might deserve 3 or more nights. The articles I looked at suggest that scientist(s) think the recent earthquakes in or near Santorini are related to magma, not the tectonic plates. Santorini is actually the top of a volcano. The risk is a volcanic eruption in addition to the normal risk of earthquakes. Greece or at least parts of it are where part of the African tectonic plate is sliding under part of the Eurasian tectonic plate. A lot could change in 11 weeks. You don't have to change your itinerary now. Check on conditions every week; unless there is a major earthquake or volcanic eruption and/or if too little tourism infrastructure is operating within a week before your trip or just before the deadline to cancel your hotels, your trip will be fine.

I agree with Carol - how about one night Santorini and three nights Naxos !

We are planning three nights Santorini and four in Naxos. I figure if things get really bad in Santorini it probably won't be safe going to Naxos either.

Our plans would be to scrap both islands and go elsewhere, possibly Corfu. We also plan to visit Rhodes but that would be later in the trip.

I try to know my options in case of natural disaster, strikes, accidents, etc. I don't necessarily make actual plans.

In regards to Santorini, I am not a shopper nor do I care about it. While there I enjjoyed visiting Akrotiri, taking in the views of the Caldera and small towns, spending part of Easter Sunday in a smaller town on Santorini observing the festivities. I was there for two nights and it seemed enough.

We were in Santorini last June for 4 days and 3 nights. It is a tourist mecca. Expect to see a lot o people getting professional pictures taken, especially women in long flowing dresses. You can expect multiple cruise ships tendering passengers to the island every day. Lastly plenty of shopping. As for earthquakes, i think there are other things to plan for like sickness or injury. Make sure you have some type of travel insurance.

Things to do:

  1. Hike from Fia to Oia. Neat to do, but start early in the day to avoid the sun and the heat. There really are no shade trees on the Island.

  2. Take an evening dinner cruise from one end of the Island to the other. Great for swimming, snorkeling, examining the caldera which is in the bay and getting sunset pictures over the Med.

  3. Hang out at your hotel and people watch.

3 day / 2 nights should be plenty.

We are on the RS Athens and best of Greece, May 24 - June 1st, we are flying in on May 14th and then flying to Paros, which is next to Naxos and has lots of great beaches, restaurants, bars, hiking, swimming and sailing. Anti-Paros is a very short ferry ride (20 mins) from Paros for a day trip. We are staying in Naoussa which has lots of accommodation choices. (We are staying at the Stelia Mare Boutique Hotel). This could be a good option. Good luck!

I previously reported some cruise lines have dropped this stop. The update is that Santorini has declared a state of emergency and banned all cruise ships currently. You can look at this two ways. Yeah! Less crowds. Or Oops! There is something serious going on for them to severely cut back on a big income stream.
