You Brits are SO cruel (it's not just you Alan!) telling us of wonderful programs we can't get in the US ... and often when they DO finally get here, they're not shown on BBC-US, but only on Premium Cable channels (grr is sound of my teeth grinding). Have never been able to see most of the wonderful Bettany Hughes programs. Sigh.

Ah, sorry Janet! Hadn’t thought how frustrating it would be for friends in the US. Not to rub salt in the wound but the Bethany Hughes are good if you ever get the chance.

Do you know some of her full progs are available on YouTube? Some consolation

Bethany Hughes' programs have been shown on Public TV in the US and ones that haven't are available on You Tube.

She's very knowledgeable and her programs are not only educational but enjoyably to watch.

Not overly scholarly, more for the layman and worth checking out

Michael Portillo did one of his "Great Continental Railway Journeys" from Thessaloniki to Athens. It was interesting if you can find it.

Janet: It's been quite a while since our local PBS ran some of her programs so you are better off using You Tube.

She is quite good and obviously a lover not only of modern Greece but especially ancient Greece.

Thanks Tommy, mainly it's for friends, I'm helping plan their trip including a week in Crete, and they want to know more about Minoans but are not quite up to my loooong shelf of books!
