airlines in Greece

Hello

We had a roundtrip trip flight through Aegean Air that unfortunately was changed and will not work with our connecting flight back to the USA. This company was recommended to us. We are trying to find out which one of these other companies would be better as a replacement flight.

  1. Volotea

  2. Sky express

  3. Hahn air systems

Our flight is from Athens to Santorini in October if that even matters. Any advice our recommendations would be appreciated.
Thank you
Lisa

We had a good experience with Spain based airline Volotea from Bari to Palermo. Sky Express is a Greek based airline.
However, it is recommended to stay the night in Athens before international flights out of Greece.

Thank you for the information

Is there a certain reason why you have to spend the night in Athens for an international flight back to the USA? This is our first time to Greece and have not heard that information. We were planning on flying out of Santorini that morning with giving us 3 hours arriving before our next flight leaving. Any information information is appreciated.

Changes, or delays, can happen with any airline.

I would agree with Joe’s advise. We flew back to Athens from Santorini the day before our flight home and got a good nights sleep at the lovely Sofitel Airport Hotel. We chose not to go back to the City because we had spent several nights prior to our RS Tour. I can’t comment on the airlines because we flew Aegean.

Planes do get cancelled or delayed less than ferries (the original root of the "be in Athens the day before your departure" maxim), but wind and weather do affect the smaller planes used for island flights as well.

But in general, it is never a good idea to plan on an independent flight to get to your overseas flight, too many opportunities for error. The risk is that even being too late to board means buying a new ticket, or paying to modify your existing flight...you just do not get to go on the next flight with no problem. I suppose if I were flying Olympic Air on a single itinerary, then no problem, but not a totally separate airline.

Thank you to everyone who has replied.
All the information has been very helpful. It has helped me make the decision to fly back into Athens on the day before. If this trip happens I want to be on the safe side.

Do you think catching a late flight (910pm) would be okay the day before? I was really wanting to see one more sunset in Santorini?
How early do I need to arrive at the Santorini airport?

thank you so much,
Lisa
