I am trying to finish up my three week vacation plan for my wife and myself next May. We are two active retired 66 year olds. This will be our third RS tour. We are going to sandwich in the Rick Steves 8 day Athens / Nafplio tour in the middle of the trip. So we want to visit some islands the week before and the week after the RS tour.
We arrive into Athens at 11 am on a Monday with the RS TOUR starting the following Sunday. So we could catch a plane to any island to start our week. The question is which islands? The Cyclades or some other area?
From my research two islands I really would like to visit are Milos and Crete. Nexos looks like a good third choice. Would a Milos - Nexos - Athens work? Or a different Island combination?
We don't want to move motels much so we are looking at three nights minimum per island.
I have one other thing to figure out which is what airport to fly from to get to London. We are using British Airline miles so we actually book one way trips. We can fly from Crete, Santorini or Athens. So we are leaning on visiting Crete the last week and flying home from there. Has anyone ever flown into or out of an island?
If we visit Crete should we split up our stay for stays on the West side and East side. They say the island is quite large.
We are also looking for suggestions on where to stay. We like central locations to restaurants and having a pool or beach access would be nice.
Would you skip Santorini for two extra days in Crete? We could take a ferry from Crete and fly to London from Santorini giving us five days on Crete and two days on Santorini?
Would you take a plane or ferry from Athens to Crete? I'm leaning towards airplane to save time.
We are thinking of visiting Hydra the day the tour ends as a day trip. Then going to Crete the next day. So we could fly to get extra time to visit Crete instead of an eight hour ferry ride. Would you take a ferry or fly? We will have the ferry experience from our trip to Milos the first week and our day trip to Hydra.
Sorry for all the questions, none of my friends have ever been to Greece so I am turning to you experts. THANKS
