accomodations in Hora Sfakion, Crete

I had written to the Xenia hotel in Hora Sfakion and got an initial acknowledgement but now when I go to their website it says "account suspended". I have had no reply to an email to them. My questions are: Do things pretty much shut down in Hora Sfakion at this time of the year and I shouldn't worry about this; OR is it likely that something is going on at with the Xenia and I would be wise to make a reservation elsewhere in Hora Sfakion? Any information or advise would be welcomed. Thanks!

I would guess that things close downas it is a tourist transportation hub.. I would recommend that you stay in nearby Frangokastello or take a ferry to beautiful Loutro.

I don't think necessarily the hotel itself has closed .... it may have decided not to pay for a website currently. However, if you try an online booking agency, the name may well pop up. Did you try booking.com /Hora Sfakion Crete? Also, remember that from Nov - Mar is the only time that owners of family-run hotels can get away, themselves? Some of them go to the Mainland, others take trips. Unless you're looking for lodgings in the early early early spring, don't fret. just wait awhile, try online booking agencies.

Yes, things pretty much shut down in Hora Sfakia at this time of year. There is a small population all year, & on a nice winter's weekend 1 or 2 tavernas will be open, but the hotels are mostly closed.
The Xenia have a Facebook page which includes contact details you could try.
It's a nice hotel in a super location.
They will be closed for the winter, probably busy picking olives & tending to things elsewhere. As Janet said, unless you're looking for accommodation out of season, I'd suggest you try them again in a few weeks.

That is good information. I did check on booking.com and they could not give me any information on the Xenia hotel. It does appear to have a fantastic location which is why I am obsessing over booking it. Given your information I will just take a deep breath and wait until spring.
In the meantime I have made a booking at Sofias room which I can cancel. Any thoughts/information on this place?

I had thought about Loutro but we also want to do some exploring and hike the Imbros gorge and I thought that actually staying in Loutro might be too limiting for the two days we will be overnighting in this area. We do plan to take the ferry to Loutro for lunch one day.
Any other suggestions for a base better that Hora Sfakion for these two days? We will be driving down from Hania, spending two nights somewhere in the Sfakion area and plan to hike the gorge; delve into WW2 history there and hangout in waterfront tavernas.
