Accommodations in Athens

We will have a few days in Athens and would welcome suggestions for accommodation? We will be there late August. Plaka area seems to be culturally located.

Our hotel go-to in Athens is the Hotel Hera. Great location. Walkable to the Plaka, the Acropolis and the Metro to get to places beyond walking. stayed there twice now.

Budget range in euros per night? That’s the way to narrow it down as there’s a large number to choose from. Also search on hotel sites & see what ones not only fit your budget but also have any other preferences you might have. Look in the areas of Plaka, Syntagma, Makrigianni, Psyrri, Monastiraki, Koukaki & around then come back with any possibles you’ve seen & we can help with narrowing that choice. I’ve personally stayed in about 30 different hotels & visited many more, I now live in Athens so can help particularly with which are good locations.

We stayed at the Airotel Parthenon which is right around the corner from the Plaka and about a 5-10 minute walk from the Acropolis. The hotel is very nice. Our room was small but clean. The included breakfast buffet was mediocre. But there are tons of restaurants nearby where you can have breakfast, which we did one morning, and it was delicious.

Check out Hotel Phaedra in the south part of Plaka (closer to Akropoli metro station). Amazing location and view. Also convenient for Temple of Olympian Zeus, Panathinaikos Stadium, the Botanical Gardens.

We stayed at the Attalos, near Monasteraki Square and convenient to a Metro station. Decent price, good breakfast, rooftop bar with great view of Acropolis

I use to always stay at the Attalos but the last few years I've gone with an Airbnb with many of them providing studios with everything you need even for just a few days.

I like Thissio, a nice neighborhood with a wonderful Greek Vibe without the crowds of downtown Athens but still close enough to everything one goes to Athens for.

Lots of options for shops, markets and tavernas and prices tend to be very low-medium budget friendly.

I'm not sure what you like in a neighborhood, but I know that Athens has it. Wherever you decide to stay, I recommend that you look at street views of the area. There are some very touristy areas that seemed to me to lack authenticity. There were also areas of the city that were a little too 'gritty' for me. We like to visit the bustling areas but stay where it's a little calmer.

I highly recommend the Mets neighborhood. It is a vibrant, upscale neighborhood just across the Zappeion Garden from Plaka. My wife and I (60) stayed in an AirBnb there for 4 nights last October. It was less than a 10 minute walk to the Acropolis metro stop and 15 minutes to the middle of Plaka. We walked from there to everywhere we went in Athens, occasionally using the metro if we were tired. It's filled the beautiful architecture and well renovated building. It's very clean, safe and relatively free of graffiti. There were plenty of restaurants (Greek and otherwise) for good dinners every night. The most surprising aspect was how very quiet it was at all times of day.
