Our stay at the Dom Boutique Hotel was excellent. Centrally located, modern, professional staff and service. Would stay there again.

In Chania your best bet is to find a hotel inside the city walls in the old town area. This is the heart of the city and has a vibrant walk along the sea front. We look for accommodation on VRBO and Booking.com. We have stayed in period homes several times inside the city walls.
Consider looking for a hotel on Theotokopouluo street.

In Heraklion we have stayed at Kronos hotel several times. Its on a busy road right beside the harbour and just a short walk into the old town area. Its family run and has an excellent reputation and has easy access to the Venetion era Castello.

Have just returned from Crete. Agree with @Stanbr that Theotokopoulou Street is a great location. We stayed at The 48 Suites. Our “suite” was on the top floor. The stairs, up to room and within, were steep and had no handrail, and the bedroom had an uncovered glass door that was problematic but tolerable. Our daughter’s room on the ground floor was great. So, it is worth consideration. Food at nearby Oinoa Wine Restaurant was excellent.

Have a great trip!
