Hi,
Looking for some advice regarding when to drop off my rental. I notice a lot of people drop off the day before and take the hotel shuttle. Is that because you can't return the rental to Avis in the early morning?

If we have an early morning flight, we always return our rental the day/night before, and stay in a hotel close to the airport. I confirm the times that the hotel shuttle begins each morning, and if the pick up point is at the hotel. That lesson was learned after we had to walk 2 blocks before dawn, because the shuttle was shared with several other hotels. Returning a rental the morning of a flight is too much of a hassle for us. Also, if you are flying to a non-Schengen destination and you are non-EU citizen, you will have to go through EES, as well as security at the Athens airport. Think about how much time you want to allot at the airport before the boarding process begins.

Thanks for your reply. I hadn't thought about EES. We connect in Zurich so I would imagine we would go through EES there?
Our hotel shuttle leaves at 5:00AM so we would get there at approximately 5:30 leaving 3 hours before the flight. I would think that is enough time if we drop return the rental the night before. Do you agree?

Yes, enough time and EES will be in Zurich.
