6 Days Mainland Greece in February

hi everyone planning to visit Greece as a family of three in February. Our flight arrives on 3rd Feb in the early morning (5am) and leaves on the 9th in the afternoon so we have around 6 full days in Greece to spare.

We are not planning to get a private car/ go on tour/ rent a car but instead just travel around with public transport. Would like to do Meteora/Delphi/Napflio but not sure if time permits, so likely to use Napflio as a base for Peloponnese Region on another trip for another time.

We plan to do
3 Feb: Athens Airport to Meteora and spend the night
4 Feb: Spend the Day in Meteora and go to Delphi to spend the night
5 Feb: Spend the day in Delphi and travel to Athens to spend the night
6 Feb-9 Feb Athens

My family are history buffs and don’t like to rush through things so I’m not really trying to squeeze too many things into the itinerary. I do feel like it’s a lot of time spent in Athens (3.5 days) so please give any suggestions or feedback! thank you

That looks pretty good to me for the amount of time you have available. Have you scoped out the transit to Meteora, Delphi?

I don't want to be pessimistic but I think your project is not going to be easy using public transport.

You cannot go from Athens airport to Meteora, you will have to go into town in Athens and take a bus to Trikala from Kato Patissia station:

https://ktel-trikala.gr/en/direct-itinerary-from-athens-to-kalambaka-meteora/

Schedules available here:

https://ktelbus.gr/tri/ticketweb/

Or a train to Kalambaka from Athens train station

Train schedule and tickets here:

https://www.hellenictrain.gr/en

Allow 1 hour to go from the airport to Athens city center then about 5 to 6 hours of travel by bus or train.
And add the bus or taxi ride to the monasteries from the train or bus station

From Meteora to Delphi there is only one bus from Trikala via Lamia.
Please note that normally only one bus per day early in the morning. Duration of the trip approximately 4h30.

From Delphi to Athens you will have to take a Ktel-fokidas.

JoLui, you are a saint for spelling this all out!
I have always wondered if it works better to fly into Thessaloniki when wanting to visit Meteora, as at least it is then a one-way trip instead of having to travel round-trip. Of course it would be a shame to fly there and then skip the city, but I have made my tentative plans for Meteora when I can fly into the north.
Keira, the driving in Greece was quite easy, except some very rural places we visited. The highway from Athens to Nafplio was just like a highway at home, then we had some easy rural driving around Nafplio. Just in case you are keeping your options open.

Valadelphia, this is what we wanted to do 4 months ago, go to Meteora from Thessaloniki with a rental car.

But for logistical reasons this was not possible and we stayed two more days in Thessaloniki, which I highly recommend because it is a very interesting city, totally different from Athens.

And from there we continued our planned trip to the northern islands of the Aegean Sea (which I also highly recommend)

hi JoLui,
Yep was planning to take the Airport-Athens-Kalambaka train and then bus, but wasn’t so sure about the Meteora-Delphi part, thank you for your suggestion! will look into it and discuss more with the family.

hi valadelphia, would you recommend trying to squeeze napflio into this trip? i was thinking that a road trip around the peloponnese region would make sense as there are a lot of stops but we don’t really plan to stop on the way to meteora and back except for delphi. we did think of renting a car but we’re not very used to driving long hours and am not sure if we can stay awake the whole ride especially due to the initial jetlag on the first day after our long flight from asia… do u think the price point for a private driver is reasonable compared to that of a car rental or even public transport for 3 people?

A private driver to take you from Athens to Nafplio costs between €200 and €250, which is around a week's car rental.

In my opinion, you cannot reasonably visit Delphi, Meteora, Nafplio and Athens in such a short time. Or you will spend most of your time in transport. You make the usual mistake of wanting to do and see too many places listed as "must see" places without taking into account travel times.

Also note that archaeological sites close at 3 p.m. in winter

Keep an eye on the weather - both Meteora and Delphi are in the interior and it is the coldest time of year. Snow is a very real possibility in the mountains!
