Booking flight into Chania
Found flight on Emirates into ATH
LAYOVER IS 55 mins
Asking anyone familiar with this airport to please give me honest opinion as to whether or not 55 mins is a reasonable amount of time to get to next flight. We are in decent shape & prepared to walk fast but just want to make sure to set our expectations properly. Any tips on how to navigate that airport would also be appreciated. 🤗
Have never been to Greece or Athens airport so super important to know before hitting the Buy button this morning
As a side question, what is everyone’s opinions on flying with Emirates and/or Sky Express?
Since you are arriving on a direct flight from Newark (per your other post), you will have to clear Schengen Immigration before proceeding to your next gate. Keep that in mind.
Is it on one ticket? We had 1 hour and 10 minute layer in Athens to go to Chania on one ticket. I had plenty of time. My husband's flight into Athens was delayed and it was dicier for him but he made it. He ended up with a 30 minute layover.
We had checked our bags all the way through. The planes to the islands are small and carry on luggage allowance is small. I would not want that short of layover if you have to check a bag for flight to Chania.
You have to walk (fast) out of the terminal and then turn left and go upstairs. If you have to check bag, you go to the left. Otherwise, keep going. There is security to go through either A or B gate. I have only been to A gate. It is electronic to get through gate with your boarding pass and then security which in my limited experience (three flights) is quick. Then you walk to your gate (fast).
We are booking one ticket from Newark to Chania with the 55 minute layover in Athens.
So wouldn’t our checked luggage transfer automatically? Or are we required to get checked luggage in Athens for customs purposes?
Trying to get full understanding of process so we don’t set ourselves up for failure.
Thx for your response!
No it is not enough ... your fast walking has nothing to do with it. Even if UAE is on time, and Athens airport is smaller than most big national airports, you have to go thru passport control, which you must count on ata least 30 minutes in line, then get your baggage from baggage claim... unless you did carry-on which I doubt, given previous consultation. Luckily arrivals/departure arae in same building for your airlines, but still.... you must find escalator or elevator to departure floor. Then you must get in line for your domestic flight ata least 45 minutes before scheduled departure. Is there a later flight? If not, then do NOT cnfirm this BAD connection. If it was a bargain, no wonder; I could have told you so earlier.
Certainly not...at least not in this summer of airport meltdowns, unprecedented travel demand, big crowds and long lines. No way would I accept a 55 minute connection (pretty much anywhere), unless I was fully prepared to miss the connection.
When's the next flight onward to your destination? You should find out, because there's a fair chance you'll be on it. If that's a couple hours later, probably no big deal. If it's the next day, is that going to impact your plans much?
Would OP have to collect luggage if it is on one ticket? We flew through via Zurich to Athens and then to Chania and did not collect luggage until Chania.
For us, there was a flight four hours later which I was not thrilled about but would have gotten us there the same day.
We flew through via Zurich to Athens and then to Chania
That explains why your 1 hour 10 minute connection was not a problem. You cleared Schengen immigration in Zurich.
Would OP have to collect luggage if it is on one ticket?
Good question, and I also wonder if there is any reference anywhere to code sharing or other cooperation between Emirates and Sky Express.
The Emirates routing I find has a 1hr 55 min layover in ATH and the flight on to CHQ arrives at 650PM
Are you sure about the times, or am I not finding what you saw?
That is because the routing Joe32F is looking at connects to Aegean, but the OP is looking at a connection to Sky Express, which leaves an hour earlier.
Sam-- Good catch.
I am not able to find anything on the Emirates site than has a connection with a Sky Express flight.
The only way I have found to buy that 'package' ( Emirate and Sky Express) is with a consolidator, not an airline.
If that is what OP did, I have no 'warm n fuzzy' feeling for this having a happy ending.
Thank you all for your responses
We found a flight with better layover time for same price
Will be booking it instead of original flight mentioned.
Thanks to all for their input.
