5 night itinerary - flying into Athens - please advise on how to plan trip

I'm flying into Athens, with two young adult kids. I'd like to spend the last two nights in Athens to visit the Acropolis and local sites. Would like recommondations on if I should take a ferry to an island the day we arrive or stay in Athens as our home base and take day trips to Hydra and Aegina.

8/5 Arrive in Athens, 8 am - how to spend the day
8/6 ???
8/7
8/8 Tour Athens, stay overnight in Athens
8/9 Tour Athens (Acropolis?), stay overnight in Athens
8/10 Board cruise ship 11 am

We enjoy seeing the sights, beaches, and restaurants. Not interested in Crete, Mykonos or Santorini as we've been already. thanks for any suggestions

You might want to consider commuting to Nafplio the day you arrive in Athens. Nafplio is a lovely sea side city just 2 hours from Athens. It has several ancient sites nearby. Its much more relaxed than Athens, Spend 3 nights there and return to Athens for 2 nights before boarding you cruise on the 10th.
We were in Nafplio for 3 days in May this year. We can recommend hotel Agamenon.

I would definitely recommend heading to Hydra for a few days! Or rent a car and go up to Delphi (beautiful drive through the mountains), or (longer drive but so worth it) go stay in Monemvasia for two nights. That was definitely one of the coolest places we visited. Renting a car and driving in Greece was surprisingly easy.
