3-week itinerary - would appreciate feedback!

Hello!

We are planning a 21-night trip to Greece starting at the very end of August into September. We have come up with a rough itinerary and are looking for feedback before we start booking accommodations. Are we missing any must-sees?? We are looking for a mix of relaxing on the islands, sight-seeing, food/wine, ancient sites, pretty towns, culture, etc. The below seemed to make the most sense to minimize the time with a car (renting it upon leaving Athens through the end of the trip) and as much backtracking as possible. We'd prefer to minimize one-night stays. We would rather not have to deal with a car on the islands - is it realistic to use buses/taxis/etc there?

4 nights - Santorini
3 nights - Naxos
3 nights - Milos
3 nights - Athens
1 night - Delphi
2 nights - Kardamyli
4 nights - Nafplio
1 night - Athens before flying out

Thanks so much in advance for your insight!

Can I come?

My only suggestion would be to spend 3 nights on santorini and four on Naxos. That is what we did and although we would have occupied ourselves for another day in santorini had we had the day, we loved Naxos even more and would have liked to had 5 nights instead of 4 there. Naxos is also much cheaper than santorini with better food. It has a tourist infra structure but feels like a real place.

Thank you Beth! You're not the only one to recommend more time in Naxos. I think we are considering 3 nights Santorini and taking a later afternoon boat to Naxos to give us an extra half-day, then 4 nights Naxos and keeping everything else the same. It sounds like you love Naxos - anywhere specific on the island you really recommend staying? Thanks again for the advice.

And, sure you can come =)

I would stay in St George which is area near the beach. Naxos Town itself and St George area are really one town. You can walk anywhere easily.

We stayed in Kymata Hotel and loved it. My 20 year old son said he was coming back to Naxos and why would you stay any where else. It is a two * hotel I think so depends what your preferences are. Some of the rooms have been redone and others haven’t. Steps no elevator. Great buffet breakfast. But best thing was the people who were so nice and helpful. We stayed in rooftop room for 3/4 nights (was booked the first night) and that gave us access to the roof where we (there were 7 of us) gathered and ate dinner for 2 nights). We actually though had a nicer shower in first room which had been renovated. The staff ordered the food we had delivered for us! European dinners are two hour affairs and we simply did not want to go out every night.

Are you wedded to Kardamyli? It’s a nice enough little town but it’s never seemed to me anything special. Delphi to Kardamyli and then up to Nafplio is quite a drive.

If it were me I’d look at Galaxidi or Nafpaktos on the north of the bay of Corinth. I think they’re both as nice as Kardamyli and you then have a nice circuit of Athens, Delphi, Galaxidi / Nafpaktos and across the Rio-Antirio bridge to Nafplio.

Or, if you are into railways and scenery have a look at Diakofto - between Nafpaktos and Corinth - and the small train to Kalavyta up the gorge.
