2.5 days - Nafplio or Athens?

Hi,

We are coming for Mani region for 4 days mid April and we have 2.5 days net left, I was thinking about Athens but afraid it would be not enough time, do you think that Nafplio is better for that amount of time?
This is our first time in mainla d Greece, we will be with children and older couple.
Both Athens and Nafplio seems beautiful and attract us (we love history, archeological sites etc.).
We are afraid that that amiunt of time in Athens would just be a rush and not really feel the city.

Any thoughs and advise on that?

Thanks

Are you flying out of Athens? To me that would be a factor. Napflio is very pretty but there is not a huge amount to do besides stroll around. Athens is stupendous but a big city so a very different feeling.

Hi,

Yes, we are flying to and from Athens. Nafplio would be a base for short trips to Epidaurus, Micenae etc.

Thanks again

You need to spend your last night in or near Athens so unless you have a night allocated to that, I would head back to Athens. We had 3 nights in Athens and saw the major sites (2.5 days).

For a first trip, I’d be fine with a brief visit to Athens, and agree you need to be there last night anyway. I’d actually feel more pressed for time with that number of days in Nafplio because of all the day trip options.

You’ll be able to see the main sights in Athens, they are concentrated, and when you return (perhaps to see eastern Peloponnesus), you’ll know if you want more time there to go deeper.
