My wife and 6 year old daughter and I just finished a 12 day stay at Rigas Pension in Nafplio, Greece and we simply can't say enough nice things about the place. The pension is located in a renovated old house, with beautiful stone walls and woodwork inside. It sits beside a lovely garden where guests typically take their breakfasts.
It is on a small traffic free street a very short walk from the town square.
It has comfortable beds in charming, quiet, clean rooms- many with private balconies.
Ample and delicious breakfasts are served by a warm and friendly staff led by the wonderful Lena, an Australian of Greek descent who has lived in Nafplio for the past 15 years.
Our family of 3 had initially booked a smaller room for more than a week and Lena suggested upgrading to a larger room for our collective sanity (and was kind enough to give us a break on the price because we were staying so long), which was the first of many helpful suggestions she had during our stay.
Being an Australian living in Nafplio has provided Lena the opportunity to understand both the viewpoints of an insider to the town and an outsider, and she was a font of information regarding great places to shop, dine and visit.
Rigas Pension is very special and highly recommended- it truly felt like a second home.
Did you have to transfer money to their bank account to reserve your room? I'm trying to book a room with them for September and am a bit concerned about their request that I send a deposit to their bank.
I had booked the room for the end of June back in early March, and although I did ask about submitting a deposit, they did not require one. Their need for a deposit may have changed now that it is well into the high season, although it does seem unusual to handle the deposit in the fashion you've described.
When I booked with them, I corresponded with them via this e-mail address: [email protected]. I don't know how secure hotmail is, so it's possible their e-mail account was hacked, and that someone is posing as them in an attempt to get you to wire them the money.
I know they also participate in some of the online booking websites- it might be worthwhile going through one of those if you are feeling uncomfortable about it- or you could also try calling them directly.
