We just returned from a trip to Hydra. Hotel Sophia (recommended in the Rick Steves book) was fabulous from start to finish. The day of our planned arrival, Hellenic Seaways was not operating due to a strike. It was the good folks at Hotel Sophia who alerted us to the strike (not the ferry operators!) and saved our trip by suggesting various alternative ways to reach Hydra from the Athens Airport. Not only did they save our trip by helping us get to the island, it turned out we did so in a far more interesting way and reached it more quickly and easily than we would have with our original plan. Once in Hydra, they took great care of us with genuine warmth and welcome. Breakfast was especially delicious. It was advertised as "continental" which brings to mind sparse offerings, but the reality was fabulous. The breakfast buffet was very generous and included all we could wish for and more - including egg/omlettes made to order. Watching the goings-on in the harbor from our 2nd floor balcony was a treat not to be missed. We would go to Hydra and stay with the folks at Hotel Sophia again in a heartbeat.
