Hotels near Larissa Train Station in Athens?

We are two women who plan to take the 2 day overnight train trip to Meteora in June, 2018. Any recommendations on where to spend the night before the morning train or when we return at 10:30 at night. We thought about staying at a hotel near the station, but it sounds like it's not safe and very "seedy". Open to suggestions on where to stay and transportation to get to the station from wherever we might stay?

Your trip must be in June 2019, since 2018 has slipped by. I did the same thing in early June 2017. My suggestion would simply be to stay very near a Metro stop, and take the Metro both ways, which is what I did. The morning train is at about 8:30 am, as I remember, not especially early. The evening train gets back at 10:30 pm or a little later, still a busy hour in Athens. I went out for dinner after returning to my hotel, getting to bed around midnight. Clearly, you could also have your hotel arrange a taxi in the morning, and catch one at the station when you return.

Another thing to think about is your baggage, try not to lug everything with you for a single night in Kalambaka, just take a minimum for the night. On the Meteora tour I took, you are on your own when you arrive, and the hotel was about a 10-15 minute walk from the station. Two suggestions, either leave your main baggage in storage at your Athens hotel, as long as you spend the nights before and after at that hotel, or if your room in Athens is low priced, you might even keep the room during your excursion, although you would not sleep there for the one night of your trip to Kalambaka/Meteora.
