5 days in Greek Islands

My husband and I will be traveling on a Rick Steves tour to Greece this May/early June. We have only 5 days to tour the islands before we meet the trip. What islands would be your suggestion? Would we fly or take the ferry? Any hotel recommendations? Thanks for any help!!

tcnelson2 - I would suggest Mykonos and Naxos as islands to visit before your Greece tour. Ferry from Athens to Mykonos is 5 hours then from Mykonos to Naxos is 1 hr 20 minutes by ferry. You can take a ferry back to Athens which would be 5 hours or fly from Naxos to Athens which is faster.

Thanks for the suggestions. Those were 2 islands on my list. I will also try to transfer this to the Greece forum (which I thought I was already in!)????

I believe these two islands would make sense for you logistically.

Great ideas... I have already been looking at these 2 in terms of flying vs ferry (cost vs time). Thanks!!

Ok I get everyone wants to see Mykonos - I’ve been there 4 times now - but the last three times we just went there as it’s a good hubbisland to fly or ferry in and out of - so only usually spend 2-4 nights there .

If you feel you must see it , I’ll suggest Hotel Zephyr, it’s right across from Paranga beach ( nice cove beach great swimming etc ) and a 10 minute GORGEOUS walk to Paradise beach ( we usually only go once to see it - pricey and crowded , although in late May and early June it won’t be too bad at all , we were there then this past year )

Now Naxos is awesome !!!! Cheaper . Nicer . More real !

I spent 4N on Naxos in late October and loved it. Quiet, good food, not touristy, nice beaches. I didn't want to change locations too often (I went to Crete and Santorini as well as Athens), or I would have spent a couple nights on Mykonos in order to visit Delos for the archaeology. In season there are day tours from Naxos, but they ended the first week of October. It's a short taxi ride from the Naxos airport to the town. The airport is really tiny. If you fly out, get there an hour before the flight and you'll still be very early. If you take the ferry, it's a 5-minute walk to the town center. Depending on how much luggage and where you're staying, you may want to take a taxi or ask the hotel to pick you up. I stayed on St. George beach, very quiet in October, probably in May as well. It has very shallow water so it attracts a lot of families with young kids, but only in summer.

Thank you for your suggestions. I like the idea of staying longer in one place and taking day trips to another!
