We plan to drive to the Zugspitze from Reutte. (Any suggestions welcome, but we are committed to that drive). Where should we actually go (what town, rail station or whatever), where do we park a car, and what do we do from there to actually reach the peak? Thank you in advance.
From by car Reutte, it's probably easiest to take the cable car from Ehrwald. I'm not sure exactly where to park, but probably near the ski slopes, I would imagine.
Simply drive to Ehrwald, Austria and follow signs for the Zugspitze. The parking lot is right by the cable car/ticket station.

There are two cable cars right to the top of Mt. Zugspitze: The Bavarian one and the Tyrolean one. The Bavarian one is on the German side and much closer to Garmisch than the Tyrolean one, which of course starts from Austria.
The Austrian one is newer and a bit cheaper than the Bavarian one - BUT the view during the ride is not as great as it is from the Bavarian one. While riding the Bavarian one remember that people had to climb that steep rock to bring down the ropes required for the installation of that cable car.
Parking for the Bavarian cable car is at Lake Eibsee. And during the ride you can enjoy the view of the lake as well: http://www.eibsee.de/
