The cable car at Zugspitze is closed until further notice. We rented a car in Innsbruck and we’re in Berchestgaden today. We planned on Ziligspitze tomorrow. Is it still worth the visit and scenery with only the cog wheel available?
If the weather is clear, there are other cable car options (Garmisch Classic, Wankbahn) that will also give you lovely views and great walks in the Garmisch area.
The view from the top is pretty impressive, and the other smaller cable cars are still available.
We've taken the cable car on the Austrian side (Ehrwald) before, so I cannot compare views from the cable car ascents themselves (it is somewhat cheaper on the Austrian side, or was). Berchtesgaden to GP is a long drive, unless you are returning your car to Innsbruck? Closer to Berchtesgaden, and a splendid view from the top, is the Jenner. You can make a day of it with Konigssee. Whatever you decide on, make sure it is a clear day as far as the forecast goes, though that can sometimes change in an instant.
I don't recommend this Netflix travel series, Jake Whitehall - Travels with My Father (season 2, episode 1, start at time 12:20), but it does have a short segment on taking the Zugspitze cable car on a not very good day.
