My boyfriend & I are planning on going up Zugspitze mountain at the end of April and would like a recommendation of hotels that will make it easy to access the mountain train / cable car.

Any hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen should work well. You will either be close enough to the train line to walk to the stations and get on, or you can simply ride the very convenient bus system to the train station. Look for hotels with a central location.

Carol is correct; GP is the best location. We actually just returned from Germany and we stayed in Partenkirchen at Hotel Schatten. The location was perfect, right in the old part of Partenkirchen and walkable to Garmisch. The hotel staff are very friendly and they give you a free bus pass to go wherever you want in town. The ride to the actual Zugspitze isn't included in the pass, but it does give you a discount.
