Zugspitze for the experience (with no hiking boots)

My family and I made a last minute detour on our vacation and are visiting Fussen for 2 days. We would like to go up to Zugspitze. Though, we have no hiking boots, and our heaviest clothing will be a heavy sweater, water proof trench jackets, scarves and hats. We would still like to visit even though the forecast is below freezing. Is it possible to visit the cafe at the summit with spending very little time outdoors? We also realize that the view may limited due to weather. We would like to go for the experience of reaching the highest peak in Germany. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

I have taken the cog train or cable car to the top of the Zugspitze several times. No problem going up. People ski on the glacier even in the Summer. I depends on what you do once you go up.

I have hiked up to the top of the Zugspitze twice. Once with my Daughter and once with my Son and two Step-kids.

It is a two day hike and the second time that I did it, it sleeted and snowed all the second day (this was in the Summer). I had hiking boots and wore a sweater under my ski jacket.

Frankly, don't remember much about the cafe, since this was over 30 years ago.

We did the Zugspitze a few years ago and I think it is totally worth going up. The cable car alone is a cool experience. Then we walked around it was fun crossing the boarder between Austria and Germany.

We did get a snack in one of the cafes (I think there are two). There are plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the view. Not just in the cafe but around the area as well.

You won't need hiking boots, the area up there is paved. I think you will be fine with what you have in terms of attire. Maybe pick up some gloves.

Hopefully you get a bright and sunny day and are able to see the whole panorama.

Plenty of places to view from the inside or have a few moments outside and warm right back up inside. Cable car is by far the quickest way vs the cogwheel.

Near Fuessen we did the Zugspitze trip from Ehrwald, Austria.

Don’t worry about the cold. You can warm up indoors and if it’s a sunny day, it’ll feel warmer than the temp says.

Good advice above. Pick a clear day, check webcams before you go. You will enjoy it.
