Zugspitz and Neuschwanstein castle

We will be staying in between these areas for one day to do both Castles, the other day to do Zugspitz, in mid-April. We would prefer the better day for doing Zugspitz, and not reserve tickets for castles until perhaps the week before we leave, or not reserve?. How are crowds during April? Am I taking a chance of not being able to reserve tickets or think will be ok if wait and see extended forecast, although that is probably a crap shoot. Also, I need to do more research, but any other suggestions to do on these two days in the area would be appreciated.

You should be fine in April without prior reservations. You can just show up to the ticket booth and expect to finish touring both castles within about a 3 hours time frame. In four years of living in Germany, I took plenty of visitors to see Neuschwanstein, and they always got in quickly. Supposedly, this is not the case during the "high season" of July and August, but I never went during those months.

We've been to both castles in October a couple of times. Didn't reserve ahead and made out ok. In mid April, with the Zugspitze dependent on weather, I would not reserve castle tickets. Go with the weather. In the area, a mile or so from the castles is Tegelberg, with a cable car trip and a luge ride (Sommerrodelbahn). The Wieskirche, with its amazing, over the top interior, is not too far away. Do take a stroll around Fuessen if you have time.
