Your favorite stop between Munich and Berlin?

Hi,

Would love to get ideas about a good stop between Munich and Berlin.
I will be arriving in Munich on a Saturday and would stay a couple of days. So this next stop would be during week days.
I enjoy sports, such as hockey and hiking, I like history, WW2 in particularly, etc

Thank you!

Two questions. What time of year and what method of transportation?

Great questions...I usually provide that details! Sorry.
I prefer taking the train if possible. It would be around mid to late May.

We really enjoyed Bamberg. Nice walking up to the old castle and along the river.

Dresden is really stunning. Bamberg, mentioned above, is also quite nice.

Leipzig is a wonderful city, and it lies directly on the main train line between Munich and Berlin. It escaped most of the destruction of WWII and the communists managed to not uglify it, so it maintains much of the elegance of it's German Empire period heyday. There's not a whole lot of museums here, but it's a great stop over for walking and people watching. And it also has one of the best zoos in Europe.

Hi,

The big cities have been suggested, Dresden and Leipzig. I f you want to see music related museums, then choose Leipzig for Bach, Wagner, Lizst, Mendelsohn. Between Munich and Berlin how much of a deviation? For small towns I recommend then Weimar, Minden an der Weser, But, if you want to see speicifically a war museum, then I suggest Munster/Oertze, between Lüneburg and Hannover.

If you look at a map, you can see what cities lie sort of in between Berlin and Munich. Leipzig and Dresden have already been mentioned, but you might want to check out some of the other cities. What about Erfurt?

Most of Germany isn't well known for their hockey teams, though big cities are going to have teams, smaller cities probably won't.

Every city is going to have its' own history, so whether you are looking for stuff about Celts, Romans, Neanderthals, Holy Roman Empire, Tribes (Alemanians, Chatten, etc.) Franks, Prussian, Religious, Teutonic Order of Knights, Jewish cultural sites, 30 Year War, WWI or WWII, Cold War, etc. you are going to find something almost everywhere you look. Depends on how much of each you want to see.

"I like history, WW2 in particularly..."

I'm surprised there's been no nod to Nuremberg.

You might have time for Bamberg too - a UNESCO World Heritage Site and only 45 minutes away, on the way to Berlin; drop bags in a locker there for a visit of several hours. Try Rauchbier?:
