I believe there's a museum in Ingolstadt, about 1/2 hr by train from Munich. I'm not aware of any other near Munich but I'm not too well versed in WWI history. Most of that war took place in the west of Germany, France, Belgium, etc..
I believe there's a museum in Ingolstadt
That's the Bayerisches Armeemuseum, the museum of the history of the Bavarian army from it's beginings till it's end 1918. Only a fraction of it covers the history of WW1. That collection is in the historical Reduit Tilly, the main building of the museum is the Duke's Castle.
If you do a looonger day trip you can also consider the reference on this topic which is for sure the German Historic Museum in Berlin. It has an own exhibition for that [epoch][1].
Be aware that it is 4 hours by train one-way.
Hi,
The military museum closest to Munich is that in Ingolstadt, the Bayrisches Armeemuseum, focusing on the Bavarian Army. It has been expanded, a very extended coverage on WW1.
If you want to see a detailed army museum in Germany per se, then I would suggest that in Rastatt, transfer trains in Karlsruhe. It can't really be done it as a day trip from Munich. Be prepared to spend the afternoon perusing the museum. I saw it 30 years ago in 1989, must be even more to see now, especially if you read German.
If you want to see the military coverage on the Hannoverian Army, go to Celle to the Bormann Museum.
Thanks, everyone for these great ideas!
