Wurzburg visit & travel nearby

In mid-September my wife and I plan to spend two nights in Wurzburg. We'd like to spend one day touring Wurzburg and need recommendations for best places to visit nearby (by rail) on the second day. We love touring historical sites and visiting "non-touristy" locations. You could call us hiking naturalists too.

Within Würzburg there are a couple scenic walks.

  • One is across the river and up to the castle (Marienberg Festung). Good views back at the city. I like the Mainfränkisches Museum (history and art) at the castle as well.

  • The second walk is up to the Käppele, a pilgrimage church also across the River Main, with good views of the town and the castle. This walk is lined with a sculpture series of the stages of the cross.

Each of these walks take about a half day.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber was not mentioned above and is very touristy in the town center. On the flip side, walks down into the Tauber Valley are rarely busy. There is a small town of Detwang with the Peter and Paul Church, which has a beautiful Reimenschneider carved altar. You must check at Rothenburg Tourist Office to see if the caretaker is home to let you visit the church. We also a like a walk out the gate near the Plönlein down thru the vineyards.

We are walkers rather than hikers and like both Würzburg and Rothenburg for getting out of town to stretch our legs.

In Wurzburg itself, do not miss the Residenze -- especially the small church on one end of the main structure. Jaw droppingly Rococo.
