Wurzburg, Rothenburg and Nuremburg

We plan on touring Germany. Our itinerary is pretty open but so far we plan on starting in Dresden, then fly to Frankfurt, then we want to see Wurzburg, Rothenburg and Nuremburg before we end up in Munich. Would you recommend staying in hotels in each place or stay in one place and take day trips by bus or train to each? Any thoughts / suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Phyllis

Personal choice. My wife and I prefer overnights in a location. We like to see what a town looks like at night and to do some evening window shopping. Evenings are often our favorite times of day. We do not mind schlepping our bags or checking into new locations.

I know that other folks hate to move and prefer day trips.

Know thy own self;)

Great towns by the way.

I'd use a hotel in Wurzburg. After fully exploring that city you can do a day trip to Rothenberg. It's fairly easy to get there by train with only one change in route. Then go from Wurzburg to Nuremburg and use another hotel. After you are through there you can go Munich. This will eliminate losing time back tracking with a day trip from Wurzburg to Nuremburg. Of course a lot depends on the amount of time you have available.

I agree with Gary. We like to spend the night to get a good feel for the town. This especially important in a very touristed town like Rothenburg. It's a whole different place in the evening after the day trippers have gone.

Seems to me like you are flying over all the places you want to see, then doubling back. You did not mention it, but it seems like you may be renting a car. It is only 4 1/2 hours from Dresden to Nuremberg on Regional Express train with just one connection. Since it is all regional trains you can do it with a Quer durchs Land ticket after 9 am on week days for 52 EUR, or 44 EUR with a Weekend Ticket any time on weekends and holidays.

From Nuremberg, it is an easy day trip to Rothenburg with a VGN Tagesticket Plus, and Wuerzburg with a Bayern Ticket, and also travel to Munich with a Bayern Ticket.

Anyway, it is an option if you can do without a car, and want to avoid all the hassles that come with flying. Car won't do you much good in Munich either.

If you do want to rent a car, why not just rent in Dresden and drive. The scenery is beautiful in the Thueringer Wald and Oberfranken. Very rural and a different Germany than what most people think of.
