Wurzburg Day Trips

My husband and I are going to be in Germany this summer and spending 3 nights in Wurzburg.

We arrive in Wurzburg one day and want to spend the day exploring it. Then we have 2 days to fill with day trips, but I have 3 options and wanted to see what everyone recommended.

The options are: Bamberg, Nuremberg and Munich.

We enjoy beer, wine, good food and history. The problem with Munich is it is a 2 hour train ride and we can only spend a day trip there. But maybe it is worth it?

Thanks for any advice!!

You just described Nuremberg.
Bamberg: Worth a day to say the least.
These are also closer to Wuerzburg and there are direct local trains so you can use a Bayern Ticket. 31 EUR for 2 and travel all day, including local tansport. Munich, although you can get there with local trains on a Bayern Ticket, it requires connections and will take a lot longer than 2 hours. More like 3 hours and 15 minutes.
And Bamberg can be reached for 26 EUR for 2 RT with a Regio Franken-Thueringen Ticket.

I agree with the opinion on Bamberg. For a more lazy day-trip you might like Ochsenfurt, a quarter of an hour from Würzburg. München is in my not so humble opinion overrated.
While in Würzburg, don't forget the fortress on the other side of the river. Nice walk-up through vineyards.

You have MANY good choices for from Würzburg. Bad Windsheim's Freilandmuseum is another you might not have considered - an amazing collection of buildings from the last 5-6 centuries where you will feel you are traveling through time:

There are two separate on-site dining options serving traditional German food; one is the Wirtshaus am Kommunbrauhaus.

(In this photo, the eatery is on the left; the Bad Windsheimer brews originate from the building on the right.)

Near the entrance is the Wirtshaus am Freilandmuseum, [where you can dine in the Gasthaus zur Krone, an historical building from 1700, on Franconian specialties - or enjoy a brew in the Biergarten.

Bad Windsheim itself is a handsome place as well. And it too is reachable by train on a Bayern Ticket.

To expand on tonfromleiden's excellent suggestion - Ochsenfurt - you could visit charming Marktbreit and Sommerhausen as well.

This video in the "A Day Out" series covers all three.

I haven't looked at the rail connections, but if feasible, consider Coburg. The old town is scenic and doesn't take long to explore. But the real reason to visit is Veste Coburg, which sits high above the town on a hill. In my opinion, this is Germany's best castle.

Bamberg is the connection point along the train route to Coburg. I have not been to Coburg but Bamberg is certainly worth a day. You could choose one and use the other to extend the day if desired. Bamberg is famous for its beer but is close enough to the Franken wine region to have an ample choice. Bamberg's cathedral and town hall (on an island) are spectacular. In Bamberg as in Würzburg the church and city warred with one another. It is worth reading a little history to understand how things came to be.

Munich is a great modern city but in my opinion a lousy day trip. You need time to get a feel for it.

Nürnberg was my home for two years and I love it. I still think Bamberg is a better tourist destination.
