Hello,
We’re seeking some advice or suggestions in regard to choosing a base town for the first portion of our 9 day trip to Germany in September, 2020.
We plan on arriving , by train, from Interlaken, Switzerland. Then, based on a suggestion we received in a previous thread, we’ll pick up our rental car in Singen, drive to the Reutlingen area in order to visit the Lichtenstein and Hohenzollern Castles, and stay for one night.
The following day we'll drive to Ludwigsburg and visit the Residential Palace. From there, we’re planning to roughly follow a route from the “Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse” road map through Markgroningen, Bietigheim-Bissingen, and a stop in Besigheim for a late lunch before continuing north.
At this point we are undecided as to which town to choose as a base for our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th nights.
Can anyone speak to the advantages or disadvantages of choosing either Bad Mergentheim or Wurzburg? Or should we consider someplace else?
What do these towns offer in the way of “old world” charm, dining options, shopping, accommodations, etc.?
We would like to take day trips to Rothenburg o.d.T, Miltenberg and Michelstadt, Bamberg, Neckarsteinach, and Heidelberg’s Old Town.
Although we’ll have a car,…for destinations like Rothenburg o.d.T and Bamberg, we might prefer to take a train, and Wurzburg seems better situated for rail connections.
Any and all suggestions are welcome!
I’d drive to Rothenburg rather than take the train
Bad Mergentheim is a spa town (bad=bath=spa) five times smaller than the lively university city of Würzburg. So for a quieter stay choose Bad Mergentheim. Being a spa there are more than enough hotels. But BM is not on a main railway line, wheras Würzburg is a railway hub. If staying in BM you should use your rental car, if staying in Würzburg you can take trains or drive. Both places are good for doing the program you have in mind.

Lived in W'burg and did day trips to all of them by car at that time. Have also done day trips from there to R'burg and H'berg by train. Those two are easy to visit by train. But you'll not have the flexibility needed for the others. Personally, I'd base in W'burg and day trip by car.
