Woodcarvers in Erfurt

Hello all,

I was looking at going to Erfurt for several reasons--one of them is the woodcarvers that are there. I was wanting to look at them online to see what all they do and the only one I can find is Martin Gobsch who Rick specifically mentions on his show. Are there other woodcarvers in Erfurt? We were thinking of possibly trying to get a special piece made that we could pick up when we are there so I would need to contact them before hand.

Does anyone know of the names of other woodcarvers in Erfurt?
Thanks

Well, until now I wasn't aware of any woodcarver in Erfurt. This isn't something you associate with Thuringia or Erfurt. Thuringia was home of a big toy industry around 1900 however, and some woodcarvers probably worked in this field. But the industry itself wasn't known for woodcarving. Erfurt also wasn't the centre of this industry, which was located on the other side of the Thuringian Forest around Sonneberg. In Sonneberg you can visit the German Toy Museums, and some of the exhibits there indeed look quite similar to the work of Mr. Grobsch. But I'm quite sure as a woodcarver he's quite unique in Thuringia.

If you are interested in woodcarving you need to visit the Ore Mountains, two hours to the east of Erfurt and to the south of Dresden. There you can find hundreds of woodcarvers. Seiffen, deep in the mountains, is a village with nothing but woodcarvers and shops. But their style is very different. This shop gives you a good impression:

It seems that Rick mentions Martin Gobsch in the context of other artisan shopping on the Krämerbrücke (Merchant's Bridge) but I don't find any indication of other woodworkers among them. You could also try emailing: info@erfurt-tourismus.de
