Winter day trips via public transport from Munich?

I've had a change of plans and now have an extra day up my sleeve in Munich and would like to use it to take a day trip (this is my second visit to Munich).

To rule out some other contenders - I have stays in both Salzburg and Nuremberg included on this trip and day trips to Regensburg and Rothenburg planned (the latter from Nuremberg). Last visit I saw Neuschwanstein Castle and Schloss Nymphenburg so those are out. I'm thinking to use the extra day somewhere in the outer skirts of Bavaria.

I'll be reliant on public transport so would like something easily accessible. Current shortlisted options are either Garmisch-Partenkirchen (would love to see Zugspitze if the weather is good), Landshut and Augsburg.

Would love to hear your thoughts on those options or whether there is maybe somewhere else I haven't considered that's worth looking at. This will be for early December.

Thanks!

Unless it's clear (and this is subject to change hourly) I wouldn't plan on the Zugspitze. I like Augsburg, and it's a easy walk into the old part of the city from the train station. You might also consider Ingolstadt or Innsbruck.

We have visited Landshut twice: once in the spring and again in December. The town primarily impressed with its many beautiful brick buildings and river front walks. There is a castle to visit, and we did in December. The walk up to the castle might depend on the weather.

We have visited Augsburg 3 times, including this April when the weather felt like December (windy and wet with snow flurries). There are more tourist sights like the gold rooms in the town hall, many churches and the Fuggerei.

Either would be a good choice. If you like just strolling through old towns, I might give Landshut the edge for a day trip.

We are going to Garmish-Partenkirchen in December as a day trip from Munich to see the gorge in winter (weather dependent though). When temperatures are low, it looks beautiful.

Train from Munich (Bayern pass), bus to Olympic Stadium and about 30 minute walk to the gorge.

If you are going to Innsbruck, a short train trip from there takes you up the cliff to Seefeld in Tirol, which even has a funicular to take you even higher. Very nice.
