We'll be staying in Boppard in May. We're looking for a really picturesque winery where we can taste some wine. Preferably with views of the vineyards and not too far from Boppard. Thanks for any suggestions.
This is not exactly a winery, but do ride the Boppard chair lift up to the cafe above the bend in the river. You can get a glass of wine and enjoy the view. The chairlift is a ten minute walk from town.
Enjoy this wonderful area, and the dry white wines.
The Günderodehaus is located on the cliffs immediately above a steep hillside vineyard just outside Oberwesel, a short drive or train ride from Boppard. The half-timbered house there was once the setting for a famous German TV series called "Heimat" (Homeland.) Views from the outdoor tables there are spectacular. Their drinks menu includes different varieties from a handful of local wineries. Food is also available:
Gedeonseck is the name of the terrace-restaurant Pat mentioins in Boppard. No vineyards there, but I would make a point of visiting both Gedeonseck and the Günderodehaus.
Wine tasting in Germany is not like going to Napa Valley. Most wineries don't offer tastings, nor do they have retail sales shops. What you find, much more common, is the Winestube, a shop with multiple vineyards represented and tastings as well as sales. If you want to look down on the river you might want to consider Sterrenberg Castle, which has a nice terrace where you can have a meal, or drink, and enjoy the view. But I like Sankt Goar; the best places to sit are probably along the river walk, but the view from the ruins of Castle Rheinfels are iconic.
In Boppard itself there is the “Weinhaus Heilig Grab”, which offers its own wines for tasting. In summer also in the garden. My personal favorite, however, would be Kloster Eberbach near Eltville.
Not Boppard, but nearby.....we really enjoyed the atmosphere, food and drink at the Weinstube Zumm Lamm in Oberwessel. It's a casual family run operation that was perfect for us after long days in the area.
I found myself wishing that we had figured out a way to stay nearby instead of in Bacharach.......
Zum Lamm in Oberwesel (just one "s") is a cozy place with traditional food. Stopped in there a very long time ago. No vineyards, no views. Nice place, though. I was lured in by the handsome sign above the entrance.
Thank you all for the great suggestions!
