We will be staying in St Goar. Any recommendations?

When? Lots of places offer wine tastings and you can get recommendations from the Tourist Info, but if you are going to be there in Nov. Dec. Jan. Feb. or March you may be out of luck.

Here is the Sankt Goar website where you might find some listings that you can email and ask about wine tastings.

September 12-15
We tried one along Mosel that Rick Steves recommended and they said they have nothing available September 13 on a Saturday which I thought was interesting.

Hi Alex-- In February I printed out a schedule of wine festivals along the Mosel this fall. Unfortunately I have no idea where I found this link.

But between Sept 12 & 15 there are wine-related festivals in Zell, Wintrich, Lieser, Zeltingen-Rachtig, Traben-Trarbach, Einkirch, Ediger-Eiler, Mesenich, Thornich, Treis-Karden, Brodenbach, Krov, Kobern-Gondorf, and Bullay.

Let me know if you want details on any of these. On 9/13 in Krov, for instance, it's a wine & fire engine festival.

Your visit also coincides with the Bad Dürkheim Wurstmarkt, which is kind of like an Oktoberfest with wine and without the mobs and drunken revelry. It's a little farther south on the Deutsche Weinstraße.

PS- Unlike in the US, France and Italy, Germany generally doesn't have stand-alone tourable wineries. Most of the grapes are grown on public-access land, and generally the grapes are pressed and fermented in a collective facility in town. Many of the "tours" I've seen offered are either just visits to showrooms and/or guided walks through the vineyards- which you can do for free on your own anyway.
