September, Wine tasting on Mosel River near Koblenz? Also tips for Breisach and Rudesheim?

My husband and I have done a few trips to Europe where we traveled independently by car and train. This year we are trying a Viking River Cruise, specifically the "Rhine Getaway". People seem to enjoy them and perhaps it will be relaxing to worry less about logistics. We have decided to stick to the tours provided and avoid the optional tours so that we have time to explore on our own. We will be traveling at the beginning of September.

Can we get some opinions on activities in Koblenz? We like scenery and wine tasting. We do a lot of photography. We are very able bodied. If we have time, I'd like to get a small taste of the Mosel and possibly do some wine tasting. Is there a picturesque town on the Mosel close to Koblenz accessible by train or bus? Is there wine tasting within walking distance?

Also, we will have free time Breisach and Rudesheim if anyone has tips of must see views, wineries or anything else they'd like to share.

Thanks!

Winningen is a lovely riverside town with numerous wineries a few miles upstream from Koblenz. Trains from Koblenz' main station are direct and take 10 minutes - fare is €3.70 each way.

I don't know where your dock is but you can likely catch a bus to the train station from a nearby bus stop if it's too far to walk; step on the bus and just buy the ticket from the driver all the way to Winningen - the train trip will be included. You will pay nothing or next to nothing for the bus ride this way.

I can't help you much with wine - I'm the Fred Flintsone of wine knowledge - but the wineries themselves, the Winningen Vinothek, or the tourist office will be a good source of information. Find the contact info. at the FAQ page below:

I really enjoyed Siegfrieds Musical Cabinet in Rüdesheim. The most unique musical boxes/instruments you will ever see and hear. Imagine the old circus sounds, or 8 violins playing automatically, player pianos, and so much more.
The tour is only 45 min. but you need to find out when they are doing a tour in English. Just stop in and ask.
