Thanks to the 'topic page' I got excellent directions from TXL airport to Berlin. Willy Brandt Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (that is the title in guidebooks) kept showing up in the guidebooks I studied but without specific location and is it for international or local flights. Just for my own information: what function does this airport serve?
The function of Willy Brandt Berlin Brandenburg International Airport is to be a bottomless money pit for German taxpayers. It was scheduled to open in 2010 and it now looks like maybe 2016. It is to replace both Tegel and Schoenefeld airports someday.
"Willy Brandt Berlin Brandenburg International Airport" is the full name for Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER, German: Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt). This airport has been under construction for a long time, it is adjacent to Berlin Schönefeld (SXF) and due to replace it. They are retiring the "Schönefeld" name because the letter "ö" confuses foreigners.
It was originally planned to open in 2010, but has had many delays (major political scandal in Germany) and now the earliest date quoted is 2017.
The guidebooks probably include the name because when they were compiled it was due to open before the guidebooks were due to hit the streets. I don’t know where the "international" comes from, that is not part of the official name and is not used in airport names in Europe (all airports are international).
When Berlin Brandenburg (BER) opens, both Schönefeld and Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) are due to close.
but don't hold your breath
How many of us remember Willy Brandt?
I remember him. As a child of the cold war, I heard his name often.
I remember well Willy Brandt.
I also remember well going to Bonn long before its tenure as capital ended.
