Just realized that the day we arrive in Munich is Whit Monday and our current plan is to go to Füssen for a night. We arrive around 7am and initially planned to take the train but read that trains may be extremely crowded. We have concerns since we have to struggle with luggage and traveling with a child. We're now thinking of driving there instead but wondering if the traffic situation might be any better. Any inputs will be much appreciated.

That's one of the many exaggerations you can read on tourism forums. Füssen is not a destination for a Muenchener's day trip like Tegernsee or Schliersee that can be reached in just over one hour. Moreover, if everything goes smooth you will have plenty of time to catch the 9:52 direct train to Füssen, which will sit in the station at least 20 min before depature. So if you arrive by 9:30 you won't have any problem to find seats. On Pentecost Monday the Bayern ticket is not subject to the 9am restriction, so you can take any S-Bahn from the airport and have time to get some food at the station. There is a food stall opposite track #29 (where the Füssen train departs).
Driving after an overnight flight is dangerous.
I will defer to SLA's reading on the train from Munich to Füssen. He lives in Bavaria.
I have some experience with trains on Whit Monday. Several years ago I rode from Hof to Freising on Whit Monday and that train was packed - probably more people standing than sitting. But that train was going on to Munich - filled with people coming back to Munich from a three- day weekend. I was able to find a seat but the train originated in Hof and was already pretty full. However, I was transferring from another train and boarded maybe only 5 minutes before departure. It had 15 minutes to sit there filling up before I boarded.
I wouldn't expect a lot of people to be headed out of Munich at the end of the holiday. And if you can't catch the 9:52 train, there is another ever hour.
Thanks for all your inputs. I was worried that the 9.51am train will be crowded with tour groups as well and there's also a need to do a transfer because it's not a direct train. I was hoping that the traffic on the road is going there will be better since it's the last day of the long weekend.
The only train I'm seeing leaving Munich Hbf for Füssen around that time on June 5 is the 9:52 direct RE to Füssen. It's the 8:53 and 10:53 connections that have transfers, in Kaufbeuren, to trains not originating there.
But the 11:52 train is also direct, so unless you are in a rush to get to Füssen, if you miss the 9:52 because of a late arriving flight, wait around for the 11:52, which goes directly to Füssen and you can board when it first comes to the platform, before it fills up.
Thanks Lee for the information. Hubby still prefers to drive from the airport. We're flying in from Singapore at night, so for a 12hr flight, he usually gets quite well rested. Any suggestion of driving route to Füssen? I read one suggestion to take 9 cut through the city, then 95 and turning off at 23. I supposed on a holiday the city will less likely be congested.
Never go through the city. Follow A99 (signposted to Stuttgart) and A96 (direction Lindau). Take exit 25 (Landsberg am Lech), then follow B17 (direction Füssen). Do an intermediate stop in Landsberg (2km off the autobahn, parking alongside the river near the station ) and / or at the Wieskirche (detour of 7km from Steingaden, signposted).
Edit: Get some food on the airport. in the countryside all shops will be closed. There is just one service area on the A96 near Landsberg.
