Which towns to visit?

Hi all,

We are spending 3 days in Bavaria (Munich) in mid December.

We have e a spare day so was wondering which of these places you would recommend. Would happily combine a few if it's doable.

I'm thinking Nuremberg is on the way back to Munich for us do quite easily from one of the other places.

Nuremberg
Bamberg
Regensburg
Rothenburg

Depends on what you are looking for - if it is for the best Xmas Markets - Nuremberg and Regensburg are great - but for Regensburg, get tickets NOW online for their private Thurn & Taxis Market - it is one of the best in all of Europe, but you must have a ticket to get in. We like Nuremberg and Regensburg much better than the Xmas Markets in Munich. I think they both need more than ONE day as a town and Xmas Market.

Make sure you spend enough time in Munich. There is much more to do there than I thought. The Deutsche Museum is a must and I would recommend one of the palaces as well.

That said if all you are doing is wanting to see an old city centre than Bamberg fits the bill. Is the only city in Germany not to have to rebuilt its Altstadt because it never was damaged by bombs. It's touristy but very beautiful and you can wander around and then get a taste of some smoked beer-a Bamberg specialty.

Nuremberg deserves an overnighter.

But again, it depends on if you are into medieval history or WW2, or just want to see an old style Bavarian town.

I would favor Nuremberg. I recognize it's a matter of personal taste and interests, but I wouldn't rate Bamberg as highly with only one day. Bamberg has one very scenic street leading to a cathedral and monastery. With such limited time, I'd choose just one city. If you want to combine historical significance with old-world feel, then it's hard to beat Nuremberg or Coburg (which is about an hour or so north of Nuremberg). Coburg is the birthplace of many European dynasties and, among other things, has an impressive and wonderfully restored medieval fortress with a museum of medieval art and a Martin Luther connection - and great bratwurst in a charming town square.
