Which Route via Car from Fussen to Baden-Baden?? North towards Stuttgart or west through Basel?

Hello fellow travelers! Has anyone driven either of the above routes? I'm wondering which is more scenic. I realize the drive through Basel is considerably longer, but if the drive is beautiful, I don't mind. However, maybe the drive from Fussen north bypassing Stuttgart is equally as beautiful and there's no need for the extra hours in the car. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Driving from Füssen to Baden-Baden via Basel isn't a good idea. If you take the Swiss autobahn you will have to buy a vignette (sticker), which is quite expensive (about 35 €). If you drive on the German side of the border it will take too long. Füssen via Ulm, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe to Baden-Baden on the autobahn isn't scenic. I would drive along Bodensee (Lake Constance), but not on Sundays because of the heavy traffic depending on the weather and the time of the year. Then I would take A81 (Autobahn 81) north up to the exit "Geisingen" and afterwards cross the Black Forest preferably on B33 via Donaueschingen, Villingen, Triberg to Offenburg. From there on A5 to Baden-Baden. On Sundays I would drive on B312 via Biberach to Riedlingen and then on B311 via Tuttlingen to Donaueschingen and then as described above.

Agree with demag.

On a related matter - are you going to Baden Baden from Füssen because they are mentioned in Rick's book?

I understand the desire for Füssen because of the iconic architecture of the palace-folly, but what is the purpose of Baden Baden?

I know the area around there pretty well, and was just there again last week.

If you are going there for the Black Forest, can I suggest that baden Baden is too far north and too far west.

If you are going there for the "Autobahn Experience" you may have seen my previous post this week where I rant against the A5, the autobahn which runs (or crawls) past Baden Baden and the western Black Forest.

If you are going for the spa, unless you want the birch twig spank, can I suggest and recommend one of our favourite places, the Keidel Spa https://www.keidelbad.de/start/ just south of Freiburg im Breisgau. Much fun and relaxment to be had, lovely atmosphere (modern not classic) and way cheaper with free parking.
