I'm researching our first trip to Berlin (me, husband and 17yo daughter), and can't seem to get a handle on which part of Berlin to stay in; I'm seeing lots of names of areas, such as Mitte, Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg, that I can't really place on the map. We will be there in October. Based on the list we have so far, it looks like we will want to visit sites and sights all over the city (i.e. Gemadergallerie, Topography of Terror Documentation Center; DDR Museum; Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenberg Gate, Reichstag, maybe Pergamon Museum). We prefer to stay in areas that are lively, lots of restaurants, near as many places we'll visit as reasonable, but not too raucous. For example, in Paris we like St. Germain; in London, Bloomsbury, and in Rome, a quiet street close to Piazza Navona. And usually, smaller family-owned hotels, 3-star in terms of the European rating system. Which area or areas of Berlin would be similar to those areas in other cities, and near sites/sights or transportation to get to sites/sights?
Thanks.
