Which Castle....Burg Eltz, Marksburg or Burg Rheinfels

This will be the first of two questions I will ask in this forum.

Traveling from near Koln where we will be visiting family down the Rhine Valley and want to take the boys to a castle along the way. I have been to all three..but not recently. For teens which one would you think they would find more interesting?

Thanks

We've been to all as well. Rheinfels is really more ruins. Our kids loved Marksburg (they were 11 and 8 at the time), as it portrayed the fun image of a true fortress/castle, complete with an interesting dungeon. We visited Burg Eltz when they were older teens but I think they remember Marksburg as their favorite.

Hi,

Visited Eltz and Marksburg. Liked them both. If I were to return to the area, I'd certainly want to see Eltz again. So if it's convenient, Eltz is my choice.

This is a hard one i guess. Since Burg Rheinfels is a ruin and the other two are still intact, i would rule out Rheinfels on that basis. Personally i have only been to Marksburg and found it very interesting, the tour there gives a good insight to live in a medieval castle, with kitchens facilities, living quaters and old armour. However reading up on Burg Eltz it seems that it is much the same you get to see there, so it must be a draw between the two for me or both if you have the time.

Rheinfels is just a big set of ruins. Neat little town, but nothing special. My vote would definitely be for Burg Eltz.

I am the odd one out. I enjoy the Marksburg, but like Burg Rhinefels a whole lot more. Have been to both of these castles at least 10 times. Marksburg is the luck of the draw as to whether or not you get a decent guide that you can also understand during your 40 min. tour.

To call Burg Rhinefels just a pile of ruins is rather incorrect. Climb the towers, enter the great hall (which takes my breath away every time I have been here) explore the tunnels, walk the walls and you will realize that it certainly is not just a pile of ruins. You can stay there as long as you like and explore on your own. Kids, especially teens would have a lot more fun here than they would at the Marksburg. Take a flashlight or make sure your phone has a flashlight ap on it. Make sure to use the toilets at the castle too. They make me laugh every time.

Is there a reason why you can't go to both of them? It is easy to see both in one day.

I agree with Jo. At Rheinfels the kids are not limited to just where they are allowed to go and what they are allowed to see for the short time of the tour. They can run everywhere and explore a real "fort" to there hearts content. When I was there, there was a couple with young boys, and the boys appeared to be having the time of their life. I was about 60 at the time, and I was there for almost 3 hours.
