My husband and I will be in Munich for three days (after several days in Switzerland). We now have an extra day between Munich and Rothenburg. Any suggestions of a small town for an overnight? We are train riders.
Or, possibly stay two nights in Rothenburg but spend one day on a day trip. Is Wurzburg worth a day trip vs small town - I'd like to know your suggestions. Thank you.
I have not spent much time in this area, but personally I would not miss a chance to see Augsburg - so much history! From Hans Holbein (both of them) to Bertolt Brecht!
Wurzburg is absolutely worth a full day if not more. It can be done as a day trip by train from Rothenberg by getting the earliest morning start possible and returning in the early evening.
Hi,
If you are in Munich with an extra day, I would suggest choosing either Ingolstadt or Augsburg, assuming you're into the history.
Würzburg is definitely worth a visit. Beautifully situated on the river. Impressive rococo Residenz. A nice walk through vineyards to the fort Marienberg on the other side of the river. And, just south of the fort, a walk along the stations of the Cross to the pilgrimage church Kappele (map).
Thanks very much for your replies. Appreciate the feedback. Think we'll station ourselves two nights in Rothenburg but take a day trip to Wurzburg. Anybody been to Dinkelsbuhl? It's on the way from Munich to Rothenburg.

D. would make for a very nice two hours or so stop. But regrettably, not for train riders. Accessible by train, however, would be the quite similar town of Nördlingen, even though with a deviation from the main line at Donauwörth (ca. 30 min one way).
