Where to stay outside of Frankfurt?

Hello - we are looking to find a town outside of Frankfurt to stay. One that has train service to get us in and out of Frankfurt and to other towns in the area. We just prefer to stay outside of the big cities and make our way around. Nothing to do with prices. In most places we have traveled we stay outside of the city centers and have found some absolute gems along our way over the years. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The S-Bahn system is many radial lines, so you're likely to need two trains each morning to get to other suburban locations. Are you trying to get a cheaper hotel? If they are walking distance to the S-Bahn they will still be affected by Frankfurt convention demand and pricing.

I'm no help because we stayed far out to use our car daily, and only went into Frankfurt one day. That was a high end luxury manor Schlosshotel Kronborg. Almost too far to walk to the S-Bahn!

We stayed in Mainz when we had a layover in Frankfurt, on our way to Namibia. We decided to spend a couple of days there to get over any jet lag before starting our safari.

Mainz was an easy, just under 30-min, train ride from Frankfurt airport. Mainz has a charming old town, the Gutenberg museum, Roman ruins, a church with gorgeous Chagall stained glass windows, and one can take half-day Rhine cruises from there, as well as trains to other towns. So, it seems like it would fit the bill for you.

Agree. Mainz was the first place I thought of. And, if you happen to be visiting in late November/December, it also has a terrific Christmas market.

I'm curious, can you tell us why you don't want to stay in Frankfurt? Is it hotel price? You don't like big cities? You have heard unpleasant things about Frankfurt? I stayed in Frankfurt at a very nice budget hotel right near main transportation hub and was very happy with the hotel and the location. I found Frankfurt a great place to stay.

Limburg an der Lahn has good train service - to Frankfurt and towns on the Lahn and down to Koblenz and therefore the Rhine and Mosel

How about Wiesbaden or Hanau?

I stay opposite of the Frankfurt train station, a nice comfortable and inexpensive hotel out the north exit.

Closer than other places mentioned, Bad Homburg is an upscale town with very frequent tram services to central Frankfurt plus its own railway station.

Mainz is generally a great base town and nearly as close to FRA airport as Frankfurt.

But I can't make it a strong recommendation until you share what "other towns in the area" you intend to visit. There could be better places to position yourselves and still have direct or very good access to FRA airport..
