Where to stay for 3 N, near Berchtesgaden and Salzburg

I will have a D-ticket, and will travel from Munich, to explore the Berchtesdaden/Salzburg region by rail, and then west in the mountains, eventually after several days heading toward Nuremberg, perhaps via Lake Constance and Ulm.

I'm coming up short on accommodation in Berchtesgaden and Salzburg that is within my budget and would like suggestions of other towns in the area, accessible by rail, that I should consider. I've read of Bad Reichenhall but wonder where else the rail-fans among you would suggest.

Sorry if this sounds naive and under-researched (it is); I'm just beginning to pull this 2-week south Germany (beginning with three nights in Munich) rail trip together.

Thank you.

Golling, Austria: nice small town outside Salzburg on the Salzach River on the railway between Salzburg and Werfen. Werfen is home to Hohenwerfen Castle. We had an apartment there a few years ago at Cafe Maier.

These two places have rooms at competitive rates and can be booked on booking.com as well. Two buildings in one operation, I believe.

Thank you; those sound lovely and I've made a note for next year's rail trip to Austria, northern Italy and Switzerland (definitely not booked at the last moment!)

This year I am concentrating on Germany (other than dabbling in Salzburg), so thinking more of wandering in the area south of Munich, bounded on the east by Salzberg and on the west by Lake Constance.

The pressing need is sorting lodging in the Bad Reichenhall/Berchtesgaden area as a base for a couple of days exploring by train. Booking a last minute trip certainly has its challenges!

As I head further west names I've read (but not researched) as I head further west include Mitterwald, G-P and Oberammergau , so more research will be required.

I prefer Bad Reichenhall to Berchtesgaden. Flat, pleasant and compact core, riverside walks, good therme, easy to get to Salzburg, fairly easy to get to Königssee, Ramsau and Prien (for Chiemsee) by rail/bus.

Don't know your budget or when you are going but Ibis will likely have rooms available: https://all.accor.com/hotel/B3X9/index.en.shtml

Thank you -- this sounds promising.

My budget is USD$ 125/night for one person. That's obviously not viable in the prime tourists locations -- but then, I enjoy simple guesthouses in non-prime tourist locations available by rail or bus. It does seems viable in Nurembur and Bamberg, but not the Alps.

CONTEXT: things fall apart (waving from Munich) - my travel companion had to go home for a family issue. I suddenly find myself with 2 weeks unplanned, between Munich and venturing further east to Czechia, Poland and beyond with a Eurail Pass that begins in mid/late May. So now I am trying to backfill the bonus two weeks with D-ticket travel and exploration throughout the German Alps but, well, accommodation on short notice (within two weeks) is a challenge!

It's a bit of a scramble ...

I suggest you try here, at Gästehaus Alpina. I've stayed here three times, the last two times, since 2012, under their new management. My visits have always been nice (typical of small German places, they have such high standards), and it is very economical for Berchtesgaden, probably because it's hidden in the valley. Although Alpina is below the town, it's close to the Hbf. It's a ½ km walk from Alpina to the Hbf and the bus station, from which you take buses if you are going to the Eagles Nest or Königssee. etc. And if you want to go into town, there are buses from the Hbf, or you can take the bridge over the tracks at the Hbf and the footpath up into town (~½ km), that's what I've always done.

I was in Bad Reichenhall last October and highly recommend it as a quieter base in the area. The connections are great, whether you want to go into the mountains or down to Salzburg, by bus or by train. I stayed at the Avalon (https://avalon-hotel-badreichenhall.com/) directly opposite the train station and really liked the convenience and the location. Depending on your dates, pricing may just about fit your budget (I'd recommend emailing them to see what they could do rather than just going by what is online).

One of my favourite meals in Bad Reichenhall was at a place that also has guest rooms, which look very pleasant: https://www.wieninger-schwabenbraeu.de/
